Mozambique – Monarchy Coins

The monarchy‑era coins of Mozambique begin under King João V with the decree of 17 January 1725, authorising the first local copper issues of 10, 15 and 30 réis. Under King José I, coinage expanded with silver and gold issues and the introduction of the “M” and “MR” countermarks applied to Portuguese and foreign coins. In 1820, 20, 40 and 80 réis coins struck at the Rio de Janeiro Mint were mistakenly sent to Mozambique, where they entered circulation and are now part of its numismatic series. During the reign of Queen Maria II, local issues circulated alongside continental coins, as well as the traditional silver “Onça‑Canelo” bars and gold “Maticais”. Under King Luís I, bronze coins of 5, 10 and 20 réis dated 1874 circulated, together with the “LM” countermark applied to foreign coins, later replaced by the “PM” countermark, used until the reign of King Carlos I. This group forms one of the most characteristic colonial numismatic collections of Mozambique.
