Brazil – Colonial Coins

The coins of Brazil represent one of the most important chapters of Portuguese colonial numismatics, reflecting more than three centuries of administrative and economic development in the largest overseas territory of the Portuguese Empire. Monetary circulation began in the sixteenth century and evolved through reforms that introduced the real, vintém, tostão, cruzado and later the réis‑based system. In the early phases, the shortage of coinage led to the use of foreign silver coins officially countermarked to authorize their circulation; later, similar countermarks were applied to Portuguese silver coins to increase their face value and adapt them to local economic needs. Coin production became significant with gold, silver and copper issues struck at several Brazilian mints, including Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, Pernambuco and Minas Gerais, which ensured local autonomy and supported the intense economic activity of the South Atlantic. These coins are characterized by a wide range of denominations, colonial iconography and manufacturing standards that progressed from manual striking to industrial production, culminating in the final issues before independence in 1822.
