The coins of King Filipe III, known as “the Great”, represent the final stage of the Philippine Dynasty, a period marked by political tension, economic difficulties and growing Portuguese resistance to the Iberian Union. Born in 1605, he ruled Portugal from 1621 until 1640, the year of the Restoration of Independence. His coinage preserved the traditional Portuguese monetary system, with struck coins such as the XX reais (vintém), half tostão and silver tostão, illustrating the continuity of Portuguese numismatics in the 17th century. These issues are highly valued by collectors for their quality, relative scarcity and the historical significance associated with the end of the Philippine period.
