Commemorative PROOF Coins (Escudo Issues)

The Commemorative PROOF Coins are special issues produced by the Portuguese Mint (INCM) between 1977 and 2001 in Escudos, created for high‑grade numismatic collecting. These commemorative coins were minted in several metal alloys, including cupronickel, silver and, in some limited editions, gold PROOF. The PROOF finish is characterised by mirror‑polished fields and frosted reliefs, achieved through a highly controlled and carefully handled production process. All PROOF issues were released in official INCM cases or folders and accompanied by certificates of authenticity. This category includes the commemorative PROOF coins in Escudos that do not belong to the Portuguese Discoveries thematic series.

€90.00

Portugal, Proof silver coin of 1000 Escudos 1999 Millennium of the Atlantic, case with silver coin Proof 1000$00 1999 1000th Anniversary of Atlantic Sailing, commemorative of the 1998 Lisbon International Exhibition - EXPO`98 (Adamastor the storm of the Portuguese navigators), Special issue from Imprensa Nacional Casa da Coin (INCM), coin integrated into the EXPO`98 numismatic plan, World Coins Portugal KM#721a. Adamastor is a mythical giant based on Greco-Roman mythology, referred to by Luís de Camões in Os Lusíadas. The Adamastor episode thus represents, in a grand and moving figuration, the forces of nature, their opposition to the audacity of the Portuguese navigators commanded by Vasco da Gama and the prediction of the tragic-maritime history that would follow. The Lusíadas illustrates the Portuguese people overcoming their fear of sailing in unknown seas, where this fear is synthesized by the figure of the giant.
