Albania Coins

Albanian coins reflect the formation of a modern Balkan state, shaped by the transition from Ottoman rule to independence in 1912 and the later introduction of the lek as the national currency. The 20th‑century issues mirror distinct political phases, including the reign of King Zog I, the Italian occupation and the socialist period, each with its own iconography and historical relevance. After 1991, Albania modernised its monetary system, issuing series featuring national symbols, cultural figures and elements of Albanian identity. Albanian numismatics is valued for the diversity of its issues and the country’s importance within the Balkan region.
