How to sell your coins, banknotes and collectible items

If you wish to sell coins, banknotes or other collectible items, we are available to make you our best offer.

Below you will find answers to the most common questions regarding the sale and evaluation of your collectible items.

1 Our physical and in‑person analysis of your items, carried out at our offices, is always free of charge, regardless of the time required. (Costs may apply only if your items are too large to be transported and require our team to travel. If such a situation occurs, these costs will be communicated in advance and we will only proceed with your acceptance.)

2 To begin the scheduling process and the eventual evaluation of your collection, filling out this form is mandatory, as well as the complete submission of your photographic portfolio, as explained below. This procedure allows us to efficiently manage the high volume of contacts we receive annually and to properly structure our responses and appointment scheduling.

Instructions for Sending Photographs

• For an effective pre‑analysis, please send clear, focused and informative images of your entire collection. These photographs are essential for assessing our potential interest in your items and, if an appointment is scheduled, for estimating the time required for the in‑person evaluation. Important: due to antivirus restrictions, we cannot open or accept compressed files (such as .zip, among others). Please do not send photographs or documents in compressed formats.

• You may attach up to 5 files in this form submission, with a total limit of 2GB (including photographs or documents). If you have many images to send, you may do so by email to geral@portugalmoedas.com.pt with the subject “Additional photographic portfolio for previously submitted form”, or via WhatsApp to 910 406 528 (exclusively for sending photographs; calls are not answered and messages sent to this number are not replied to). Please note that sending images through these channels is only valid if the form has been submitted beforehand; otherwise, the process will not be analysed and will not receive a response.

Photographs for organised collections (binders, albums, coin trays)

• For a correct pre‑analysis of an organised collection, please send one photograph of the entire set of binders, albums or coin trays. (This photograph allows us to identify the overall size of the collection.)

• Next, send focused photographs of the internal pages or trays, where the coins or banknotes can be clearly seen.

• You must begin photographing in chronological order, starting with the oldest coins and progressing to the most recent ones. Give special attention to older items or those with potential value, but you must photograph all pages of the albums or all trays of the coin holders without exception.

Photographs for loose coin or banknote assortments

• For loose coins or banknotes, group the items in photographs of 10, 20 or more units, arranged in several rows, side by side, forming a square or rectangular layout according to the best focus of your mobile phone. Bring the coins or banknotes close together so you can photograph the largest possible number of items while maintaining good focus.

• For coins, the side showing the date must face upwards. For banknotes, the main face of each note must be visible.

Give a short summary of your collectible assets explaining:
- what kind of items you included,
- is it a set of items or a collection? If so, what is its dimension?
In order to quantify, use the following examples:
- a shoebox, full or half full, of coins.
- in case your collection is filed in binders or binders, you should indicate the number of binders and size (A4 or A5), how many sheets in each.
- summarizing the size of your collection, quantify how many suitcases you fill, for example trolleys or airplane cabin cases.
Also explain to us the antiquity of your assets:
- how many generations it has been in the family
- which are the oldest items you identify and which are the most recent

To complement the information, please send images that help us understand the context of your assets.
If possible flag older items or those that you identify as being of greater value. Always give preference to the side of the item where the date appears.
You can photograph several items in a single image, but we ask that you send us photos with the best possible clarity and good focus. You can take them with a camera or cell phone.
If you have access to a scanner or multifunction printer with a scanner, you can scan them. You can place multiple items on the scanner’s glass or place the binders on it.

3 After submitting the form and your photographic portfolio, we will carry out a preliminary analysis. When we reply, you will receive our message by email, which will include your process number in the subject line.

If there is a manifestation of potential interest from our side, you must schedule the in‑person evaluation exclusively by telephone, using the number (+351) 938 406 867 (national mobile network call). Appointments made by email are not valid, as direct clarification is always required.

4 We can only assign a value to your collection or assortment after an in‑person evaluation. We carry out only one evaluation per person, so when scheduling your visit, you must bring all items you wish to present — including duplicates, surplus items or any others you want evaluated. A second appointment will not be scheduled, nor will a new evaluation be carried out for items not presented during the first visit.

5 There is never any obligation for either party to buy or sell. A transaction only takes place if there is mutual agreement, and if so, it will be completed on the day of your visit. The transaction is only possible if you are the sole owner of the items presented, as we do not make offers on items belonging to third parties.

6 For several years we also operated a physical store in Coimbra, located in the historic downtown area near the Church of Santa Cruz. Since 2022, we have strengthened our digital presence, focusing on online sales through our website, and we closed that physical location.

Our offices are exclusively dedicated to pre‑scheduled appointments for analysis, evaluation and potential acquisition of items. Although only the Águeda office is publicly identified, we have other service locations. Attention: you must never go to any location without a confirmed appointment, as you may not find anyone available to assist you.
