Coins of King Luis I (1861-1889)

The coins of King Luís I (1861-1889) reflect a reign characterized by political stability, economic modernization and scientific and cultural development. Luís I, known as “The Popular”, was born in 1838 and became the thirty‑third King of Portugal following the death of his brother, King Pedro V. Married to Queen Maria Pia of Savoy, his reign was marked by industrial progress, infrastructure expansion and significant improvements to the Portuguese navy, an area of personal interest to the monarch. The coinage of this period includes copper, silver and gold issues, featuring among their variants the legend LUDOVICUS • I • PORTUG: ET • ALGARB: REX, and showcases refined iconography consistent with 19th‑century mechanical minting.
