Coins of King Pedro IV (1826-1828)

The coins of King Pedro IV (1826-1828) represent one of the shortest yet most decisive periods of the Portuguese monarchy. Pedro IV, known as “The Soldier King”, was born in 1798 and became the twenty‑ninth King of Portugal after the death of King João VI. Also Emperor of Brazil as Pedro I, he abdicated the Portuguese throne in favour of his daughter, Queen Maria II, triggering the dynastic conflict that would lead to the Civil War. The coinage of this brief reign bears the legend PETRUS•IV•D•G•PORTUG•ET•ALGARB•REX and includes copper, silver and gold issues, maintaining mechanical minting and featuring iconography characteristic of the early constitutional era.
