Coins of King Fernando I (1367-1383)

The coins of King Fernando I, known as “the Handsome”, belong to a reign marked by political instability and conflicts with Castile, which would eventually lead to the 1383–1385 crisis. He ruled from 1367 to 1383, attempting to strengthen royal authority and modernize administration while facing significant internal opposition. His coinage includes bolhão dinheiros and half‑dinheiros, as well as new types such as the crowned pilarte, the grave and the barbuda, reflecting the evolving iconography and economic needs of the period. The issues of Fernando I are highly valued by collectors for their diversity and for their importance in the final phase of the 1st Portuguese Dynasty.
