Commemorative 200 Escudos Coins (200$00)

The commemorative 200 Escudos coins form the largest group within Portuguese commemorative coinage, comprising forty six issues minted between 1991 and 2000 in cupronickel and bimetallic format. Among the thirty nine cupronickel coins, the most notable are the Portuguese Discoveries series III to XI, each consisting of four coins that continue the thematic programme initiated with series I and II in the 100 Escudos issues. These series celebrate key episodes, figures and moments of the Portuguese maritime expansion and are highly sought after by collectors. The seven bimetallic coins complete this group, beginning in 1994 with “Lisbon 94 European Capital of Culture” and concluding in 2000 with the coin dedicated to the Sydney Olympic Games. These issues reflect the thematic variety and technical evolution of the Portuguese Mint during the final decade of the Escudo, presenting pieces that commemorate national anniversaries, international events and cultural celebrations.
