Coins of King Afonso VI (1656-1683)

The coins of King Afonso VI (1656-1683) reflect a politically unstable period in Portuguese history. Afonso VI, known as “The Victorious”, was born in 1643 and became the twenty‑third King of Portugal, although his reign was marked by physical and political limitations that led to the regency of his brother, the future King Pedro II. During this period, copper and silver coins were issued, including réis, vinténs, tostões and cruzados, often associated with monetary adjustments and stamped coins used to regulate older circulating currency.
