Coins of King João VI (1816-1826)
The coins of King João VI (1816-1826) correspond to the period in which João VI fully assumed the throne after the death of Queen Maria I. Known as “The Clement”, he was born in 1767 and became the twenty‑eighth King of Portugal, ruling during a time marked by the presence of the royal court in Brazil and the political changes that preceded Brazilian independence. The coinage of this phase bears the legend JOANNES·VI·D·G·PORTUG·BRASIL·ET·ALGARB·REX, reflecting the official designation of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves. Copper, silver and gold issues from this period illustrate the continuity of mechanical minting and the monetary adjustments of an empire in transition.
