1 Escudo Coins 1969–1979

The 1 Escudo coins issued by the Portuguese Republic between 1969 and 1979 correspond to the bronze system established under Decree‑Law 49167 of August 4, 1969. This series, known as the large‑module 1 Escudo coins, features a consistent design and module across all dates from 1969 to 1979. It represents the final bronze issue of this denomination before the introduction of the later brass‑nickel system, which replaced the larger module. These coins remained in circulation until January 1, 1987, when they were withdrawn under Decree‑Law 293/86 of September 12, 1986, marking the end of the traditional escudo format.
