1 Escudo Coins 1927–1968
The 1 Escudo coins issued by the Portuguese Republic between 1927 and 1968 correspond to the alpaca system established under Decree 13797 of June 21, 1927. Although the alloy, design and module remained unchanged throughout the series, production was not continuous, reflecting economic conditions and minting requirements of the period. The issues span the years 1927 to 1931, 1935, 1939, 1940, 1944 to 1946, 1951, 1952, 1957 to 1959, 1961, 1962, 1964 to 1966 and 1968. This system represents the main 1‑escudo type of the mid‑twentieth century and remained in circulation until January 1, 1982, when it was withdrawn under Decree‑Law 267/81 of September 15. Its longevity and widespread use make it one of the most representative series of Republican coinage.
