Coins of D. João Príncipe Regent (1799-1816)
The coins of Prince Regent João (1799-1816) correspond to the period in which João assumed the government of Portugal due to the mental incapacity of his mother, Queen Maria I. Although he had exercised governmental duties since 1792, he officially became Prince Regent on 15 July 1799, remaining in this role until the queen’s death in 1816. The coinage of this phase bears the legend JOANNES·D·G·PORT·ET·ALG·P·REGENS and includes copper, silver and gold issues, reflecting the continuity of mechanical minting and the monetary stability of a period marked by internal tensions and the preparation for the transfer of the royal court to Brazil.
