Coins of D. João Príncipe Regent (1799-1816)

Prince D. João, son of D. Maria I and D. Pedro III. With the death of his father in 1786 and the aggravation of the Queen Mother's mental illness, from 10 February 1792 Prince D. João took over the government of the kingdom, assuming him definitively as Prince Regent, as of 15 July 1799 until his mother's death in 1816.
