50 Centavos Coins 1927–1968
The 50 Centavos coins issued by the Portuguese Republic between 1927 and 1968 correspond to the alpaca system established under Decree 13797 of June 21, 1927. Although the alloy, design and module remained unchanged throughout the series, production was not continuous, reflecting economic conditions and minting requirements of the period. The issues span the years 1927 to 1931, 1935, 1938, 1940, 1944 to 1947, 1951 to 1953 and, later, 1955 to 1968. This system represents the main 50‑centavos type of the twentieth century and remained in circulation until January 1, 1982, when it was withdrawn under Decree‑Law 267/81 of September 15. Due to its longevity and technical consistency, it stands as one of the most representative fractional coinage series of modern Republican numismatics.
