Coins of Prince Regent Pedro (1667-1683)
The coins of Prince Regent Pedro (1667-1683) reflect a period of major political and monetary transition in Portugal. Pedro assumed the regency after deposing his brother, King Afonso VI, governing the kingdom until 1683. His regency marked the shift from manual coin production to mechanical minting, as well as the introduction of edge serration on precious‑metal coins to prevent clipping. During this period, copper and silver coins were issued, including réis, vinténs, tostões and cruzados, often linked to monetary reforms and stamped coins used to regulate circulating currency.
