Coins of King Miguel I (1828-1834)

The coins of King Miguel I (1828-1834) reflect the absolutist period that defined his reign and ultimately led to the Portuguese Civil War. Miguel I, known as “The Absolutist King”, was born in 1802 and became the thirtieth King of Portugal after seizing the throne from his niece, Queen Maria II. His authoritarian rule faced strong liberal opposition led by Pedro IV. The coinage of this period bears the legend MICHAEL•I•D•G•PORTUG•ET•ALGARB•REX and includes copper, silver and gold issues, produced through mechanical minting and featuring iconography characteristic of the Miguelist regime. His reign ended in 1834 with the liberal victory and his permanent exile.
