Coins of King Pedro II (1683-1706)
The coins of King Pedro II (1683-1706) reflect the consolidation of the monetary modernization initiated during his regency. Pedro II, known as “The Pacific”, was born in 1648 and became the twenty‑fourth King of Portugal after the death of his brother, King Afonso VI. His reign marked the definitive adoption of mechanical minting and the widespread use of serrated edges on precious‑metal coins, essential measures to prevent clipping and strengthen monetary reliability. During this period, copper, silver and gold coins were issued, including réis, vinténs, tostões and cruzados, often linked to reforms and stamped coins used to standardize Portuguese currency.
