200 Escudos Coins
The 200 Escudos coins of the Portuguese Republic represent the final circulating system of this denomination before the introduction of the Euro. These bimetallic coins feature a copper‑nickel centre and a brass‑nickel outer ring, making them the second Portuguese circulating coins produced with this technology. They were created under Decree‑Law 156/91 of 23 April 1991 and remained legal tender until 1 March 2002, when they were officially withdrawn under Decree‑Law 117/2001 of 17 April 2001. Several dates include the variant known as the “berloque on the brass ring”, a feature sought after by collectors. This category includes only the regular circulating 200 Escudos coins, distinct from the commemorative bimetallic issues, which belong to the dedicated commemorative 200 Escudos series.
