Coins of King Sebastião (1557-1578)
The coins of King Sebastião I, known as “the Desired”, belong to one of the most symbolic and dramatic reigns in Portuguese history. He ruled from 1557 to 1578, a period marked by regency, strong religious influence and the ill‑fated expedition to Alcácer‑Quibir, where he disappeared without leaving an heir. His coinage includes copper ceitils, silver vinténs, half tostões and tostões, illustrating the technical and artistic evolution of Portuguese numismatics in the late 16th century. These issues are highly valued by collectors for their rarity and for the historical and mythical significance of this reign.
