10 Escudos Coins 1928–1960

The 10 Escudos coins from 1928 to 1960 represent the first issues of this denomination under the Portuguese Republic, beginning with the commemorative coin of the Battle of Ourique dated 1928, created under Decree‑Law 15386 of April 18th 1928, followed by two circulating silver series featuring the iconic Caravela design. The first series, struck in Ag 835 silver, includes the years 1932 to 1934, 1937, 1940, 1942 and 1948, created under Decree‑Law 19 871 of June 9th 1931 and withdrawn from circulation on January 1st 1955 by Decree‑Law 40021 of December 31st 1954. The second series, dated 1954 and 1955, introduced an updated shield engraving on the reverse and a new silver fineness of Ag 680, effectively continuing the system initiated in 1932; it was created under Decree‑Law 39 508 of January 2nd 1954 and withdrawn from circulation on May 1st 1966 by Decree‑Law 46961 of April 15th 1966. This group therefore includes the 1928 commemorative coin, the first Caravela system in Ag 835 silver and the second Caravela system in Ag 680 silver, reflecting the aesthetic and metallurgical evolution of Portuguese Republican coinage in the twentieth century.
