The coins of King João I, known as “of Fond Memory”, belong to the beginning of the Avis Dynasty and reflect a period of political renewal and national consolidation after the 1383–1385 crisis. He ruled from 1385 to 1433, strengthening Portuguese independence and promoting economic and maritime development that would pave the way for the Age of Discoveries. His coinage includes several emblematic types such as the black real, the white real, the half cruzado real and the ten‑soldos real, illustrating the evolution of the Portuguese monetary system.
