The coins of Queen Maria I and King Pedro III (1777-1786) correspond to the first phase of Maria I’s reign, during which she ruled jointly with her husband, King Pedro III. This phase is identified by the legend MARIA I ET PETRUS III DEI GRATIA, found on copper, silver and gold issues. Maria I, known as “The Pious”, became the twenty‑seventh monarch of Portugal, while Pedro III held the title of King Consort. The coinage of this period reflects the continued use of mechanical minting and features joint iconography, clearly distinguishing it from the second phase of the reign, which began after Pedro III’s death in 1786.
