10 Escudos Coins 1971–1974
The 10 Escudos coins from 1971 to 1974 represent the continuation of the Caravela design, now adapted to a smaller module and struck in a distinctive metallic composition, being the only series of this denomination produced in nickel clad cupronickel. These coins form the third official issue of 10 Escudos of the Portuguese Republic and were minted in the years 1971, 1972, 1973 and 1974. Created under Decree‑Law 49 167 of August 4th 1969 and updated by Decree‑Law 525/70 of November 6th 1970, they were withdrawn from circulation on January 1st 1982 under Decree‑Law 267/81 of September 15th 1981. All dates present an incuse edge inscription with two collectible variants, appearing either in normal or inverted orientation. The inscription reads “ESPERANÇA ⇹ FRATERNIDADE ⇹ CONFIANÇA ⇹”, and collectors typically seek to assemble both variants for each year.
