Coins of António, Prior of Crato (1580-1580)
The coins of António I, known as the Prior of Crato, belong to one of the most turbulent and intriguing periods in Portuguese history. Born in 1531, son of Infante Luís and grandson of King Manuel I, he led a remarkable and eventful life that drew attention across Europe. He proclaimed himself king in 1580 during the succession crisis that followed the death of King Henrique I, although his rule was brief and contested. His numismatic legacy is highly distinctive, consisting mainly of the famous Açor countermarks applied to earlier copper ceitils and other circulating coins, along with a few extremely rare original issues. These pieces are greatly valued by collectors for their rarity, uniqueness and the historical significance of this transitional period before the Iberian Union.
