Coins of King Filipe I (1581-1598)

The coins of King Filipe I, known as “the Prudent”, mark the beginning of the Philippine Dynasty and the Iberian Union, during which Portugal maintained its own monetary identity despite the union of the crowns. Born in 1527, he ruled Portugal from 1581 to 1598, preserving Portuguese administration and ensuring the continuity of national coinage. His issues include emblematic types such as the XX reais (vintém), XXXX reais, half tostão and silver tostão, illustrating the technical and artistic evolution of Portuguese numismatics in the late 16th century. These coins are highly valued by collectors for their quality, diversity and the historical significance of the early Philippine period.
