Portuguese Emergency and Municipal Banknotes
The emergency and municipal banknotes of Portugal form one of the most distinctive areas of Portuguese paper‑money, comprising issues produced from the late 19th century to the early 20th century to address coin shortages, economic crises and local circulation needs. The official emergency notes issued by the Portuguese Mint between 1917 and 1922 were created to ensure daily transactions during periods of severe metal scarcity, while numerous municipalities, councils, charitable institutions, regional banks and private entities produced their own local notes, often printed in small typographies and valid only within their region. These highly diverse issues, varying in design, signatures, formats and rarity, are today among the most sought‑after items in Portuguese notaphily, offering valuable insight into local economic life and the administrative autonomy of Portuguese towns during moments of monetary pressure.
