The coins of King João IV (1640-1656) reflect the beginning of the monetary reorganization that followed the Restoration of Portuguese independence. João IV, known as “The Restorer”, was born in 1604 and became the twenty‑second King of Portugal, ruling from 1640 until his death in 1656. Married to Luisa María Francisca de Guzmán, he led the political and economic recovery after the Iberian Union. During his reign, copper, silver and gold coins were issued, marking the renewal of royal authority and the economic restructuring of the Restoration period.
