Struck in the early years of the Portuguese Restoration, this 1641 Half Tostão illustrates the technical irregularities typical of manual minting. The coin stands out for its visibly re‑engraved obverse die, where the legend shows unusual corrections and distortions, including the rare closed “C” in HOC, forming the “HOO” variant. A notable piece for the study of João IV die varieties.

Unpublished silver Half Tostão 1641 of King João IV 1640-1656, ✤IOANNES IIII DG REX.PO / ✤IN HOC SIGNO VINCES, the only coin I know with the obverse shields cornered by dots topped by a Fleur-de-Lis. I do not recall seeing this variant classified or mentioned in any auction or catalogue to date; in my view, this is the first known specimen to be documented.

It was created by the Royal Decree of June 8 during the reign of King John IV, known as “The Restorer,” the twenty-second King of Portugal, born in 1604 and reigning from 1640 until his death in 1656. His wife was Dona Luísa Francisca de Gusmão.

Struck in the early years of the Portuguese Restoration, this 1642 silver tostão reflects King João IV’s political and monetary consolidation after the end of Spanish rule. The Cross of the Order of Christ and the Latin legends emphasize the royal and religious symbolism of the period, making this coin one of the most emblematic issues of the new dynasty. The J4.68.10 variant is particularly valued for its iconography and the diversity of known dies.

Unlisted Portuguese variant of Group 74 of João IV, distinguished by clearly visible erased “1642” die traces around the Cross of Saint George, providing strong evidence of die reuse. The die morphology suggests repurposing one of the dies from the 1642 Portuguese Two Gold Cruzados, the only coins from Portugal with this configuration. A unique specimen, currently the only one known with these features.

Very rare coin, Tostão Prata D. João IV 1640-1656, Lisbon, non-cataloged variant, crown of pearls, legend ✣ioannes IIII DG Rex Portvga / ✣in Hoc.Vin.ces, the Tostão or 100 réis silver with crown of pearls in Catalog A. Gomes only appears J4.75.02 and J4.75.03. These are very rare coins to appear on the numismatic market. This coin is even rarer, and corresponds to the same mintage as the 2nd known coin belonging to the collection of the "Casa da Moeda Museum" of Portugal, with the reference MCM 13576. Coin created by the Decree of June 8, 1643, during the reign of D. João IV, nicknamed "The Restorer", was the twenty-second King of Portugal. He was born in 1604 and reigned over Portugal from 1640 until his death in 1656. His wife was Dona Luísa Francisca de Gusmão.

The reverse legend clearly shows “INHO.SIGNO” instead of “IN.HOC.SIGNO”, a variety which, in my opinion, is significantly undervalued in the Alberto Gomes catalogue given its rarity, as this variant seldom appears on the numismatic market. This coin was ordered to be struck by Royal Decree of June 8, 1643, during the reign of King João IV, known as “The Restorer”, the twenty-second King of Portugal. He was born in 1604 and reigned from 1640 until his death in 1656. He was married to Dona Luísa Francisca de Gusmão.
