5 Centavos Coins
The 5 Centavos coins of the Portuguese Republic were issued in two distinct systems. The first, a larger bronze module, was created by Law 1085 of December 9, 1920 and includes the 1920, 1921 and 1922 issues. Its production ended under Decree‑Law 9718 of May 23, 1924, and it was withdrawn from circulation on January 1, 1927 by Decree 12 892 of December 17, 1926. The second system, a reduced module, was introduced by Decree 9718 of May 23, 1924 and produced the 1924, 1925 and 1927 issues. Its minting ceased under Decree‑Law 32 648 of January 29, 1943, and it was withdrawn from circulation in 1949 by Decree‑Law 37 120 of October 27, 1948. With more than 55 million coins struck across both systems, this denomination is notable for its technical diversity and historical relevance within the early Republican monetary reforms.
