200 Réis and 500 Réis Coins of King Luís I (1861‑1889)
The 200 Réis and 500 Réis coins of King Luís I (1861‑1889) represent the mid‑value silver issues of the period, all struck in .916 fine silver under the 1854 monetary law. The 200 Réis exist in two distinct series: the first, from 1862‑1863, features the initial portrait engraved by Francisco de Borja Freire and is listed in the L1.10.xx group; the second, from 1865‑1888, bears the standard portrait by Frederico Augusto de Campos and belongs to the L1.11.xx group. The 500 Réis, equivalent to five tostões, were minted between 1863 and 1889, with a 30 mm module and 12.5 g weight, and are catalogued in the L1.12.xx group. All types are also referenced in the World Coins catalog (KM#507, KM#512 and KM#509).
