Portugal 1$00 Banknote
The 1 escudo banknote issued by the Bank of Portugal represents the first full denomination of the escudo system, equivalent to 100 centavos. Printed as Chapa 1, it features on the obverse a seated female figure reading a book, symbolising Literature, while the reverse presents a figure holding a small harp, representing Poetry. Three dated issues exist — 7 September 1917, 29 November 1918 and 25 June 1920 — with more than thirty‑two million notes produced. The 1918 issue is the scarcest, with only five hundred thousand examples printed. Internationally catalogued as Pick 113 in the World Paper Money reference, this note was withdrawn from circulation on 30 January 1929 and remains an essential piece of Portuguese paper‑money collecting.
