Malta Coins
The coins of Malta reflect the country’s monetary development following independence in 1964, marked by the introduction of the decimal system based on mils, cents and the Maltese lira. Issues from this period feature strong national identity, depicting historical elements, marine wildlife, traditional architecture and symbols of Malta’s Mediterranean heritage. The series includes aluminium, bronze and copper‑nickel coins, as well as special issues from the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, which are highly valued by collectors. These coins represent the consolidation of Malta’s monetary system prior to the adoption of the euro. Malta’s euro coins (from 2008 onwards) are not listed in this category; they are available under “Euro Coins – European Countries”.
