Coins from the Portuguese Monarchy

The coins of the Portuguese Monarchy cover the historical period from 1143, the foundation of Portugal, until 1910, the year the Republic was established. Known as the “Kingdom of Portugal and the Algarves”, the monarchy lasted nearly 770 years, ruled by 35 monarchs and divided into four successive dynasties: 1st Dynasty – Afonsina, 2nd Dynasty – Avis, 3rd Dynasty – Philippine, and 4th Dynasty – Braganza. This category gathers the coinage issued under each reign, reflecting the political, economic and artistic evolution of Portugal across eight centuries.
