The 2$50 to 20$00 escudos coins of Angola represent the final stage of the monetary system of the former Portuguese colony, marked by the adoption of cupronickel and the introduction of higher denominations suited to the territory’s economic development. The 2$50 and 5$00 coins were struck exclusively in cupronickel, with the 5$00 issue of 1974 standing out as the rarest Republican coinage for Angola. Although 3,350,000 pieces were officially minted, the coin never entered circulation and it is widely believed that all known examples originate from a single holder who brought them from Angola after the revolution. The controlled release of these pieces over the past decades has sustained their scarcity and contributed to the numismatic speculation surrounding them. The 10$00 and 20$00 denominations were issued in two distinct phases, first in silver and later in cupronickel, reflecting the technical and economic adjustments of the late colonial period.
