Coins of King João V (1706-1750)
The coins of King João V (1706-1750) reflect the economic and artistic peak of the Portuguese monarchy during the “Brazilian Gold Cycle”. João V, known as “The Magnanimous”, was born in 1689 and became the twenty‑fifth King of Portugal, presiding over a reign marked by wealth, centralized authority and Baroque splendour. The abundance of Brazilian gold enabled large‑scale minting, especially in gold and silver, including cruzados, dobrões, tostões and vinténs. These issues stand out for their high technical quality, full adoption of mechanical minting and the majestic iconography characteristic of the Joanine period.
