20 Centavos Coins 1969–1974

The 20 Centavos coins issued by the Portuguese Republic between 1969 and 1974 represent the final system minted for this denomination, adopting a bronze alloy and a consistent design throughout the series. Created under Decree‑Law 49167 of August 4, 1969, these coins maintained the same module and typology across all dates from 1969 to 1974. They mark the last phase of the 20‑centavos fractional coinage before the monetary reforms that preceded the end of the traditional escudo system. The series was withdrawn from circulation on January 1, 1982 under Decree‑Law 267/81 of September 15, concluding the use of this denomination in Portuguese currency.
