50 Escudos Coins
The 50 Escudos coins of the Portuguese Republic represent the final circulating system of this denomination before the introduction of the Euro. Struck exclusively in copper‑nickel, they were created under Decree‑Law 293/86 of 12 September 1986 as part of the monetary reform that updated Portugal’s circulating denominations. They remained legal tender until 1 March 2002, when they were officially withdrawn under Decree‑Law 117/2001 of 17 April 2001. This category includes only the regular circulating 50 Escudos coins, distinct from the silver commemorative issues, which belong to the dedicated commemorative 50 Escudos series.
