100 Escudos Coins

The 100 Escudos coins of the Portuguese Republic represent the final circulating system of this denomination before the introduction of the Euro. These bimetallic coins feature a brass‑nickel centre and a copper‑nickel outer ring, making them the first Portuguese circulating coins produced with this technology. They were created under Decree‑Law 439‑A/89 of 20 December 1989 and remained legal tender until 1 March 2002, when they were officially withdrawn under Decree‑Law 117/2001 of 17 April 2001. Several dates include edge variants with 10 or 12 sectors, with the 1991 twelve‑sector variant being notably scarce. This category includes only the regular circulating 100 Escudos coins, distinct from the commemorative bimetallic issues, which belong to the dedicated commemorative 100 Escudos series.
