The Straits Settlements were a group of British colonies in Southeast Asia, established along the Strait of Malacca, an important maritime route between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea. The colony initially included Penang (1786), Malacca (1824), and Singapore (1819), to which the island of Labuan was later added. The administrative capital alternated between Penang and Singapore, with the latter becoming the main political and economic center from the mid-19th century onward.
