Coin likely recovered from a shipwreck, as indicated by the presence of saltwater corrosion. King Afonso VI, known as "The Victorious", was the 23rd King of Portugal, born in 1643, and reigned from 1656 until his death in 1683. He was married to Maria Francisca Luísa Isabel of Aumale and Savoy.

João Prince Regent, variant with error and later rectification by the hubbing opener when engraving the face value and date on the coin, tall and narrow crown with diamond diadem 2 points and 3 pearls in the central arch of the crown, on the reverse, quatrefoils with closed petals cantonating the Cross of the Order of Christ, in the legend letter "S" on the obverse with serif on the reverse without serif, World Coins Portugal KM #331. In this example, the error made by the hubbing opener is perfectly visible, as he initially engraved the year "1810" in mirror image on the left of the shield and the face value "400" on the right, which after its rectification left details on the die that reveal this error in the coins minted.
