Luís I of Portugal, born in 1838, was the 32nd King of Portugal. He reigned from 1861 until his death in 1889. Nicknamed 'The Popular One', he was also known as the numismatist king. During his reign, his mentor and curator of the royal collection, Teixeira de Aragão, published the first and most comprehensive numismatic catalogues of the period in Portugal.

João took on the responsibility of government from 10 February 1792, assuming it definitively as Prince Regent from 15 July 1799, until his mother's death.

The Peninsular War (1807–1814) was a military conflict between the First French Empire and the alliance of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, the Spanish Empire and the Kingdom of Portugal and Algarves for dominance of the Iberian Peninsula during the Napoleonic Wars. The conflict began when the French and Spanish armies invaded and occupied Portugal in 1807, returning in 1808 after France turned against Spain, its ally until then. The war lasted until Napoleon's defeat by the Sixth Coalition in 1814, being seen as one of the first wars of national liberation and significant in the emergence of large-scale guerrilla warfare.
