Coins were minted in the alpaca alloy (Cu 610 - Zn 200 - Ni 190) and coins were minted from 1927 to 1968, they were created by Decree 13797 of June 21, 1927. The issue ceased under the terms of Decree-Law 49167 of August 4, 1969. Withdrawn from circulation under the terms of Decree-Law 267/81 of September 15, 1981. Nomenclatura Numismática is a short but important work on numismatic terminology, written by the Portuguese scholar José Leite de Vasconcelos. Portugal unpublished coin, silver coin of Tostão D. João IV 1640-1656, variant with unprecedented characteristics, Loose Cross and Loose Shield, visible traces of use of hub of coins a Mint dated 1642, the only known example with these characteristics. This coin is a variant of group 74 of the "Alberto Gomes" catalogue in which only copy 74.01 appears with a loose cross on the reverse and a shield flanked by dots on the obverse. In this copy, the loose shield and loose cross are clearly visible, but its most interesting feature is that it has traces of a coinage with an erased date of 1642 cantonating the hollowed-out cross of Saint George. The precision of the location of the erased date leaves no doubt that it is from the origin of the coinage. It was most likely used by the coin opener from one hub of the coinages of the 2 gold cruzados dated 1642, the only ones with the cross of Saint George cantonated by date.
