The Currency of Portugal in the World – The Coinage of Brazil, by J. Ferraro Vaz, is a historical and numismatic study focusing on the circulation and influence of Portuguese currency in Brazil. The book examines the monetary systems used during the Portuguese colonial period and the historical evolution of coinage in the Brazilian territory.

Published in Braga in 1986, the work forms part of Ferraro Vaz’s broader studies on the presence of Portuguese coinage across the former Portuguese overseas world. Illustrated and accessible in style, the volume connects numismatic evidence with the history of Portuguese maritime expansion.

Coin with 250 Réis countermark (rare “2S0” countermark, smaller size, variant type “G”) of King Afonso VI (1656–1667), applied on a Half Cruzado silver coin from Porto mint, of King João IV (1640–1656) — A. Gomes J4.91.11. The legend reads “...REX PORTVGALIE...” with smaller PPPP letters. Reference: World Coins Portugal KM#434.3. There are numerous unclassified and still-studied variants; however, this is the only coin I know of with this specific combination of typological and countermark variants, making it, in my opinion, an example of great rarity.

This coin was created by Legislation: Decree nº13, of May 7, 1921, Provincial Ordinance nº241 of December 30, 1922, Provincial Ordinance nº142 of August 4, 1923, 12124 of August 14, 1926, it was the second series of 50 centavos coins issued for to circulate in Angola, coins with the date 1927 and 1928 were minted in Alpaca metal alloy (Cu 610 - Zn 200 - Ni 190).

João Prince Regent, medium crown variant of 30 pearls, 2 pearls in the central arch, 6 pearls in the front internal arches, 5 pearls at the beginning of the external arches and 3 pearls inside them, 1-point diamond diadem, in the caption letter "S" ornamented and with serif, on the reverse quatrefoils cantonating the cross of the Order of Christ with closed petals and large center, cross of the Order of Christ ✠ 21 mm, in the caption letter "S" closed "8" ornamented and with serif, World Coins Portugal KM#318. Coin minted during the reign of D. João Prince Regent (1799-1816), born in Queluz on May 13, 1767, son of D. Maria I and D. Pedro III. Due to the illness of the Queen Mother, Prince D. João took on the responsibility of government from 10 February 1792, assuming it definitively as Prince Regent from 15 July 1799, until the death of his mother.
