Coin from São Tomé and Príncipe, 10 centavos dated 1962, struck in bronze and classified as KM #15 in the World Coins catalogue. It was created by Decrees No. 41,501 of January 4, 1958, and No. 44,286 of April 20, 1962, intended for circulation in what was then the colony of São Tomé and Príncipe, part of Portuguese Africa. The islands of São Tomé and Príncipe remained uninhabited until their discovery in 1470 by the Portuguese explorers João de Santarém and Pedro Escobar. Gradually colonized during the 16th century, they became an important commercial center within the context of Atlantic trade. São Tomé and Príncipe achieved independence in 1975.

João took on the responsibility of government from 10 February 1792, assuming it definitively as Prince Regent from 15 July 1799, until the death of his mother.

It was created by Decree-Law No. 49,167 of August 4, 1969, and its issuance ceased under the terms of Decree-Law No. 267/81 of September 15, 1981. The total mintage across the various dates between 1969 and 1974 was 88.888.538 coins.
