Description and technical characteristics:

Denomination: 1000$00 ‘one thousand escudos’, ‘1000 Escudos’

Plate: 12

Front view: An allegorical scene featuring, as its central figure, the Portrait of Teófilo Braga (1843–1924), who held several doctorates and was renowned as a distinguished historian of Portuguese literature, poet and statesman; to his left, within a composition of four pointed arches, is a medieval illustration, whilst the remainder of the plate is occupied by a varied arrangement of geometric designs reminiscent of Hispano-Arabic tiles.

Reverse: An allegorical representation featuring, most prominently, a 12th-century Romanesque capital from the Machado de Castro National Museum resting on a book and papyri; also visible are oak and laurel branches, to the left of the capital, the first royal seal of 1134 bearing the inscription “Portugal”, and to its right, a composition of four pointed arches containing four illustrations representing song, music, dance, poetry and writing.

Design: Luís Filipe de Abreu

Watermark: located on the right, on a white patch, the bust of Teófilo Braga in a frontal position.

Security features: a micro-printed security thread in a broken line with “Portugal”; on the reverse, yellow fluorescent illustrations when exposed to ultraviolet light.
