Obverse Description:

The obverse of the 5 Escudos Angola banknote, dated January 1, 1921, features on the left the portrait of Francisco de Oliveira Chamiço, engraved in the characteristic style of Bradbury Wilkinson & Co., with fine lines and dense shading. At the bottom centre appears the Coat of Arms of Portugal, framed by ornamental elements that reinforce the institutional character of the issue. On the right is the traditional steamship seal — the Steamship Seal, here in Type III — a symbol associated with the Banco Nacional Ultramarino and its overseas operations. The frame is composed of geometric and floral borders, within which are distributed the inscriptions BANCO NACIONAL ULTRAMARINO, PROVINCIA DE ANGOLA, CINCO ESCUDOS, and the payment clause “PAGÁVEL NAS DEPENDÊNCIAS DA PROVÍNCIA DE ANGOLA" (Payable at the branches of the Province of Angola). The note also bears the printed signatures of Vice‑Governor Henrique José Monteiro de Mendonça (HJMM) and Governor João Henrique Ulrich (JHU), positioned symmetrically, reinforcing the balanced and formal composition of the obverse.

Reverse Description:

The reverse of the 5 Escudos Angola banknote, issued on January 1, 1921, presents a classical composition typical of the iconography of the Banco Nacional Ultramarino, dominated by a central seated allegorical female figure. The character, depicted with flowing garments and a serene posture, holds a symbolic branch while gazing toward the maritime horizon, where steamships and sailing vessels can be seen — a direct reference to overseas trade and the economic role of the BNU in the Portuguese colonies. The frame is elaborate, with neoclassical ornamental borders filled with floral motifs, geometric patterns and volutes that enhance the symmetry and visual balance of the composition. In the corners appear the numeral “5” inside decorative medallions, while the inscriptions BANCO NACIONAL ULTRAMARINO and PAGÁVEL NAS DEPENDÊNCIAS DA PROVÍNCIA DE ANGOLA complete the design, harmoniously distributed along the border. The printing, typical of Bradbury Wilkinson & Co., shows fine lines, dense shading and high‑quality engraving work, giving depth and elegance to the reverse of the note.
