The Philippines, officially the Republic of the Philippines, is an island country in Southeast Asia, comprising more than 7,600 islands located in the western Pacific Ocean. The country is geographically divided into three main areas: Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
The country has a long and distinctive colonial history: the area was ruled by Spain for over 300 years (from 1565) after the arrival of Ferdinand Magellan. Later, after the Spanish-American War in 1898, the Philippines came under the rule of the United States. The country also experienced a period of Japanese occupation during the Second World War. The Philippines gained its definitive independence on 4 July 1946.
