António Prior of Crato 1595 - 1995, World Coins Portugal KM#680. D. António, Prior of Crato, (better known by the nickname of the Prior of Crato, the Fighter or the Independentist, due to the emphasis placed on the recovery of Portugal's independence), was the natural son of Infante D. Luís and grandson of Manuel I, having been one of the pretenders to the Portuguese throne during the succession crisis of 1580. He was acclaimed king of Portugal, on the island of Terceira in the Azores, but never reached the throne of Portugal.

It was authorized by Decree‑Law No. 49 167 of August 4, 1969, and revised by Decree‑Law No. 525/70 of November 6, 1970. Coin issuance ceased under Decree‑Law No. 765/75/86 dated December 31, 1975, and coins were withdrawn from circulation on January 1, 1982, pursuant to Decree‑Law No. 267/81 of September 15, 1981. The designers and engravers were: Jaime Martins Barata (obverse), Marcelino Norte de Almeida (reverse), José Rosa (engraver). The coin is cataloged internationally as KM #600 in the Standard Catalog of World Coins (Krause)
