The coins of Queen Maria II (1834-1853) reflect the consolidation of the liberal regime following the end of the Portuguese Civil War. Maria II, known as “The Educator”, was born in 1819 and became the thirty‑first monarch of Portugal, ruling during a period of political reform, institutional stabilization and administrative modernization. Married to King Ferdinand II, she presided over a reign of progress and state reorganization.
